Swap Questionaires

September 2008 SoSeSaSwa (Socktopus Secret Santa Swap) Questionaire

1. What are your favourite colours and fibres? I love really rich colours – especially blues, reds and purples. Sometimes greens but I lean more towards rich greens although olives might be interesting to try… they’re certainly good to eat.

2. Anything that makes your toes curl? (Fibre, colour, other) Hmmm – Curl in a good way – I don’t really know but I’m loving the twisted cables on one of the socks I’m knitting and love lace (not so much in socks though) so I’d have to go with texture… Curl in a bad way – hairy yarns, acrylic, novelty, neon colours, not really keen on pastels either.

3. Would you describe yourself as a beginner, intermediate or advanced knitter? It depends what I’m knitting. For lace I would say an advanced intermediate, for socks probably an intermediate, and colourwork probably a beginner

4. Do you have an online wishlist? (Amazon or other) No. I’ll probably need to look into this, but it sounds dangerous.

5. Any new techniques you’d like to learn? I’d love to do some more twisted cabling in socks and am drooling over my pattern for Zum Dirndl from Yarnissima. I’d like to do some more faire Isle and would like to try steeking… probably not possible in a sock pattern. I’d like to learn to design as well.

6. What is your favourite:

Snack? I prefer savoury – crisps, olives, etc
Book? Too many to count – I tend to go for trashy so currently I have Diana Palmer, Christeen Feehan, and Stephanie Laurens on the floor beside the bed.
Movie? I’m not a big chick flick fan and don’t like horror so I’ll have a think and come back on this one.
Music? All sorts, again I’ll have to go check what comes up as favourites on the mp3 player (not an ipod and I don’t want to have to download itunes so if I’m sent music I prefer mp3s)

7. What are your favourite items to knit? I’m in a sock streak this year and I also love lace, although I’m never quite sure what to do with it. I also enjoy knitting hats and bags.

8. Any patterns that are top of your queue? Far too many. I will try to get round to resorting my queue though. I am loving the Zum Dirndls above and am toying with the idea of knee high socks – Can women wear kilt hose do you think?

9. Do you have any other hobbies? I’m involved with the Guides and Brownies and have just taken up spinning. I am also learning a bit about natural dying and would like to try acid dying.

10. Tell us about yourself. When did you first pick up your needles? Who/what encouraged you to start knitting? How would you describe your knitting style? Are you a process knitter or a product knitter, etc. I remember my Mom teaching me with blue acrylic to make a small bit that was probably a Barbie scarf. I think I was seven or eight. I next remember my grandmother teaching me to knit lace from her Barbara Abbey book and I was maybe 8. I don’t know how much I did it at the time but picked it up again at University and have been doing it a lot in the last ten years or so.
I have been a process knitter for some time and enjoying keeping my hands busy and trying new techniques, but I think I am becoming more of a product knitter as i have actually been fnishing things in the last few years.

June 2008 Secret Pal 12 Questionnaire

What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely not like? I’m on a sock yarn kick at the moment but I’m also a laceweight fan and as I want to learn to dye I’m interested in interesting base yarns. Felting is fun so 100% wools are great too. I really don’t like eyelash yarns and am not a fan of acrylics.
What do you use to store your needles/hooks in? My Options are living in their binder and my Harmony dpns do the same. The rest are all over the place. Long straights in a Glenfidich tin, shots, circulars, and other dpns in tins.
How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced? I’ve known how to knit for over 25 years and used to knit lace edgings in my late teens. I’ve been doing a lot more knitting in the last 10 years or so. I’ve been knitting lace for a while so would say I’m intermediate to advanced in it but as I’ve only started socks last year I’d say I’m more of a beginner to intermediate. Woolly was my first real taste of Fair Isle and I’ve not really done much with any other sort of colourwork.
Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list? No
What’s your favourite scent? I’m not fond of scents/candles/etc. I used to work in a craft (sales not supplies) shop and the potpourri drove me insane. I have to leave shops if they are highly scented because I start feeling a bit ill.
Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy? I love candies and chocolates but not chocolates with fruit or fruit flavours. I’m also a mint fan and if I see new mints in the shop I usually get a pack to try.
What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin? I can sew a bit but need to learn how to do it properly. I used to tat and make bobbin lace as well. I have far too many beads and have done some stitch markers and beading as well but nothing really complicated. I should really learn to spin as I’m on the committee of the East Sussex Weavers, Spinner, and Dyers Guild but apart from flirting with dying I don’t really do any of those things. I’ve tried drop spindling but wasn’t that taken by it and I don’t have room for a wheel.
What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD) All sorts, Folk, folk rock, country, maritime, celtic, pop, dance, hard rock, comedy… it’s all over the place. I prefer MP3s though because I don’t have itunes.
What’s your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can’t stand? I love blues, purples, deep greens, reds, and sometimes pinks as well as natural fibre shades. I’m not a big fan of yellows, oranges, pastels, neons, etc.
What is your family situation? Do you have any pets? DH and I have a flatmate but no kids or pets.
Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos? Hats definitely and sometimes scarves. It doesn’t really get cold enough for mittens here and I don’t really understand ponchos.
What is/are your favorite item/s to knit? I’ve taken up sock knitting this year and am really enjoying it. I’ve always loved lace and enjoy making felted bags. I enjoy hats as well.
What are you knitting right now? Actively, I am knitting socks, a hap shawl, and a prototype bag pattern.
Do you like to receive handmade gifts? I don’t know. Bags are always useful. If you work with wire or beads then a shawl pin would be fantastic.
Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic? I used to be an Addi Turbo addict but got a set of Knitpicks options last year and a set of the harmony dpns for Christmas. They are fantastic. I like the Addi Lace Turbos as well. I’m pretty well stocked up with needles because of this.
Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift? I have a really old ball winder that doesn’t work well so might put it and a swift on the Christmas list.
How old is your oldest UFO? The oldest one I know where it and the pattern are is a merino hap style shawl from a workshop in 1997(?).The merino does not block well and I just haven’t got round to frogging it.
What is your favourite holiday? Probably Christmas but any holiday or break from work is great.
Is there anything that you collect? Badges for my campfire blanket. If you’re a Guider or a Scouter (or you have access to one) I’d love to get some of your local/regional badges. Woolly also likes to have small pins and badges to do with knitting as well.
Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have? I prefer technique books rather than pattern books. Old lace pattern books are quite interesting as well and I would love to find a needle gauge for really small needles… I have a set of old UK 24s and I’ve been told I may need to go find a body piercing place to check the sizes. I subscribe to Spin Off and Interweave knits and give in occasionally to piecework. I’m trying not to cave in too much for the knitting magazines because they tend to spawn themselves.

Are there any new techniques you’d like to learn? I’m starting to dye and have lots of bits for natural dying. I’d be interested in doing some acid dyes. I keep thinking I should learn to quilt although I’d probably want to make interesting bags rather than quilts.

Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements? I’ll add this in later when I work out where to measure.
When is your birthday? February
What’s your Ravelry ID? Whereswoolly (of course)

January 2008

I’m taking part in the UK Swap so here is my questionnaire.

Part One: Crafting

Do you knit, crochet, or both? Currently I’m only knitting, maybe one day I’ll take it up but I’d rather learn to spin or dye

What do you like to make? Do you have a favourite project? I really like lace but have just started on socks and enjoy felting as well.

Do you have a favourite type of fiber or brand of yarn? I love laceweight/cobweb yarn and natural fibres but have a secret soft spot for Noro Kureyon and Jamiesons Spindrift.

Do you have a least favourite type of yarn? Eyelash and novelty yarns. I’m not a fan of acrylic but is useful for some baby garments.

Do you do any other crafts? I’m a member of the East Sussex Spinner, Weavers, and Dyers Guild although I don’t really do any of them (yet). I also like interesting beads and buttons… you can never have too many buttons.

What knitting do you bring ‘on the go’? Pretty much anything can be a portable project. I knit a large Shetland Shawl (black Cobweb) in a pub and on a bus with the Guides on the way to Switzerland. I’m alternating between a sock (Karenina) and The Secret Spring Shawl on the train

What do you carry your ‘on the go’ knitting in? Do you want something new? Usually in a Ziploc bag in my backpack or whichever bag I’m using at the moment. I have a bag I knit in Sari Silk that is usually my knitting bag if I’m using it. Not sure if I need a new bag but if my partner is a sewer then I really like the Bali quilting cottons or an Indigo dyed cotton.

Are there any knitting gifts (book, toy, yarn, item, tool) that you have been lusting over? I like those WPI gauges and have been looking for a needle gauge that will measure needles smaller than 2mm

Part Two: Your Favourites

What is your favourite colour? I love deep, rich Reds and Blues (and purples, pinks, greens). I also like natural colours and would love to learn some natural dying

What is your least favourite colour? I’m not a big fan of pastels or flourescent colours, especially variegated pastels.

What scents/smells do you like? What don’t you like? I’m not a fan of highly scented things since I used to work in a shop with lots of potpourri. I’m also not a fan of candles having had to scrub the walls of my university dorm when the soot utrned them black under all the posters.

How do you like to pamper yourself? (bubble bath, hand creams, massage, manicure) Usually by sleeping in but long baths with a good book are also good.

What goodies to you like to treat your tummy with? (chocolate, biscuits, truffles, etc.) Yum… Chocolates and biscuits, as long as they don’t have fruit in them. Mints are also fantastic

Do you prefer tea or coffee while you knit? Any particular kind? Favourite mug/cup? I don’t drink tee, coffee, or hot drinks (yes, I am a freak). I don’t have a particular mug

Do you listen to/watch anything while you knit? (TVshow-Along, movies, music, podcasts) I usually put documentaries or movies on in the background. Forensic programs, cookery programs, Mythbusters, Time team, they all are good to knit along to.

Part Three: Living & Past-times

Where do you live in the UK? (General idea not address) Brighton

Have you always lived here, or did you grow up somewhere else? I’m from Canada originally and spent 2 years in Lesotho (a country landlocked in South Africa) when I was in my early teens

If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? I’d love to go to South America and India/China/Asia or back to Africa.

If you couldn’t go to a knitting group, what other kind of gathering would you go to? (book club, tea party, yoga class, jewelery class, etc.) I like craft workshops, am a member of a Weaving/Spinning/Dying Guild, and am a Brownie leader. Meeting with friends in the pub is good too.

What’s your style? (elegant, traditional, glamourous, girly, natural, sporty, outgoing, etc.) Not sure… not sporty though. I can get away with Jeans and T-shirts for work so I never really got beyond those. When I do dress up it tends to be very dressy and elegant

Final Part:

Any allergies/preferences (fiber-wise or treat-wise)? Not that I know of although I do have a phobia about Baked Beans

Anything we missed that you’d like your partner to know? I collect badges for my badge blanket so if you know any local Guiders/Scouters I like the local/regional silks and standard badges
